What is the difference between FR4 material and Rogers material?
In fact, FR-4 refers to a material rather than a material, it is a composite material of glass-reinforced epoxy laminate. FR-4 is made of glass fiber woven cloth and flame-retardant epoxy resin adhesive. FR stands for flame retardant, which means that the material complies with the standard UL94V-0.
For electronic component engineers and PCB designers, FR-4 glass epoxy resin is a popular and versatile high-pressure thermosetting plastic laminate grade with a good strength-to-weight ratio. FR-4 metal core printed board has nearly zero water absorption and is most commonly used as an electrical insulator with relatively high mechanical strength. It is known that the material can maintain its high mechanical value and electrical insulation properties under both dry and humid conditions. These attributes and good manufacturing characteristics make this grade widely used in various electrical and mechanical applications. Therefore FR-4 stamped printed wiring board can perform well under most environmental conditions.
Rogers PCB is a company that manufactures laminate materials used to make circuit boards. Most buile-up printed circuit boards are made of a material called FR4 (flame retardant grade 4), which is a glass fiber/epoxy composite material with copper foil laminated on one or both sides.
Roger 4003 printed board will sell you FR-4 laminates (FR-4 core and copper laminate), which are known for having better high-frequency performance cores, such as PTFE (Teflon). They are more expensive than glass fibers, but have less loss at high frequencies. This makes them very suitable for RFmulit-wiring printed board.
