Purpose:
Prevents a flame from traveling past the flashback arrestor in the event of a flashback.
Never connect a torch to acetylene and oxygen tanks(cylinders) without installing a set of flashback arrestors at the Torch/Hose/Regulator.
Without these safety devices, it is possible a flash can occur within the hose, and ultimately follow back into the tanks, causing an explosion.
This would be an extremely rare occurrence, but flashback arrestors will make it a "never" occurrence.
Check valves are only a first line of defense and may not ultimately stop a flashback. Only the flashback arrestors will.

Note:
The use of both regulator and torch mount flashback arrestors with heavy industry equipment requiring high gas volume is not recommended because it may cause excessive flow restriction.
It is always better to place the safety devices at the rear of the torch than at the regulator in order to protect the hose.
