Main uses
graphite
1. As refractories: graphite and its products have the properties of high temperature resistance and high strength. They are mainly used to make graphite crucibles in metallurgical industry. In steel-making, graphite is commonly used as protective agent for ingots and lining of metallurgical furnace.
2. As conductive materials: in the electrical industry, it is used to make electrodes, brushes, carbon rods, carbon tubes, the positive electrode of mercury positive current device, graphite gasket, telephone parts, coating of TV picture tube, etc.
3. Wear resistant lubricating material: graphite is often used as lubricant in mechanical industry. Lubricating oil can't be used in high speed, high temperature and high pressure condition, but graphite wear-resistant material can work at high sliding speed in 200 ~ 2000 ℃ without lubricating oil. Many equipment conveying corrosive medium widely use graphite material to make piston cup, seal ring and bearing. They don't need to add lubricating oil during operation. Graphite emulsion is also a good lubricant for many metal processing (wire drawing, tube drawing).
4. Graphite has good chemical stability. Specially processed graphite has the characteristics of corrosion resistance, good thermal conductivity and low permeability, so it is widely used in the production of heat exchanger, reaction tank, condensator, combustion tower, absorption tower, cooler, heater, filter and pump equipment. It is widely used in petrochemical industry, hydrometallurgy, acid-base production, synthetic fiber, papermaking and other industrial sectors, which can save a lot of metal materials.
The types of impermeable graphite have different corrosion resistance due to different resins. For example, phenolic resin impregnation is acid resistant, but not alkali resistant; furfural resin impregnation is both acid and alkali resistant. The heat resistance of different kinds of graphite is also different: carbon and graphite can withstand 2000 ~ 3000 ℃ in reducing atmosphere, and begin to oxidize at 350 ℃ and 400 ℃ respectively in oxidation atmosphere; the varieties of impermeable graphite vary with impregnant, and the heat resistance of impregnated graphite with phenolic resin or furfural alcohol is below 180 ℃.
5. It can be used as casting, sand turning, die pressing and high temperature metallurgical materials: due to its small coefficient of thermal expansion and its ability to withstand the change of rapid cooling and heating, it can be used as a mold for glassware. After using graphite, the black metal can be used with accurate size, smooth surface, high yield, and can be used without processing or a little processing, thus saving a lot of metal. In powder metallurgy process such as cemented carbide, graphite material is usually used to make ceramic boat for pressing die and sintering. Crystal growth crucible, regional refining vessel, support fixture and induction heater of monocrystalline silicon are all made of high purity graphite. In addition, graphite can also be used as graphite heat insulation board and base for vacuum smelting, furnace tube of high temperature resistance furnace, rod, plate, grid and other components.
6. For the atomic energy industry and national defense industry: graphite has a good neutron deceleration agent for atomic reactors, uranium graphite reactor is one of the most widely used atomic reactors. The decelerating material used in nuclear power reactor should have high melting point, stability and corrosion resistance. Graphite can fully meet the above requirements. The purity of graphite used in atomic reactor is very high, and the impurity content should not exceed dozens of ppm. Especially the boron content should be less than 0.5ppm. In the national defense industry, graphite is also used to make nozzle of solid fuel rocket, nose cone of missile, spare parts of space navigation equipment, thermal insulation material and anti radiation material.
7. Graphite can also prevent boiler from scaling. The test of relevant units shows that adding a certain amount of graphite powder (about 4-5g per ton of water) can prevent boiler surface from scaling. In addition, graphite coating on metal chimneys, roofs, bridges, pipes can prevent corrosion and rust.
Graphite can be used as pencil lead, pigment and polishing agent. After special processing, graphite can be made into various special materials for the relevant industrial departments.
9. Electrode: why can graphite replace copper as electrode?
In the 1960s, copper was widely used as electrode material, the utilization rate was about 90%, and graphite was only about 10%. In the 21st century, more and more users began to choose graphite as electrode material. In Europe, more than 90% of electrode material is graphite. Copper, once the dominant electrode material, has almost lost its advantage over graphite electrode. What led to this dramatic change is, of course, the advantages of graphite electrodes.

(1) Faster processing speed: in general, the machining speed of graphite can be 2 ~ 5 times faster than that of copper, while the speed of EDM is 2 ~ 3 times faster than that of copper
The material is more difficult to deform: it has obvious advantages in the processing of thin rod electrode; the softening point of copper is about 1000 degrees, which is easy to deform due to heating; the sublimation temperature of graphite is 3650 degrees; the thermal expansion coefficient is only 1 / 30 of copper.
