These Damascus steel billets consists of different types of the steel heated to welding temperatures and mashed together until they form one steel. The billet is then drawn out, cut or folded, the process is repeated again and again, every time doubling the number of the layers, with about 60 true layers. To get a consistent, strong edge these billets consist of softer stainless out layers and hardened to about HRC28, and with a hard single steel VG10 core hardened to about HRC58. This is a good hardness for outdoor knives as well as general duty kitchen knives. The surface is grinded to about 400 grits and already do the acid etching to see visable patterns. If want to have deep patterns, acid etching with FeCl3.
